When We All Get to Heaven?

Epistle and Gospel unite again today to offer common ground in an issue that so often preoccupies Christians: What’s to become of non-Christians when death comes, or Christ returns. Paul focuses his concern on the Jews while Jesus reaches out in compassion to the daughter of a foreigner who needs release and restoration. Deliverance isn’t a theme that easily captures our attention or draws our concern, but it will today. Although Jesus’ initial reaction to the request of the Woman of Canaan is unattractive, even unbecoming, the process that unfolds holds up a hope that we can see others with new eyes and open hearts and that we can resist the tendency to forget those who are so easily forgettable.
