The night is far spent, and daylight is drawing near. These words bring an exhilaration that darkness is about to give birth to light. The readings offer a woven narrative of the covenant, promise, and fulfillment in dark and light, life, and death. The present is a fractional moment between the time. A microsecond behind us is the past–a microsecond ahead of us is the future–and we live in between, seeing the past and future in the here and now. Moments of lingering darkness, then, yield to the new dawn. We are called to be believers ready to inhabit the light.
