Like mid-summer weather, things start to heat up in the middle of Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus has manifested the “empire” of God as the agent of God’s releasing and restoring presence. The basic thrust of this reading is in the deep sense that all life is moving toward Christ and that to receive Christ we must be oriented towards Christ.
