We are called to a moment of extreme self-examination, asking ourselves if we are indeed worthy of receiving and accepting the invitation God offers to participate in the great feast of heaven’s kingdom. We are also called to ask: Are we genuinely rejoicing in God who provides all we need? The thorny subject of idolatry confronts us. Is there a 21st-century equivalent to worshiping false idols? Do our false idols already command so much of our attention that we have nothing left for God? If we dare to face our idols, then Christ’s face is the mirror into which we want to look with hope for souls.
