Jesus challenges any present-day notion of “family values” in this reading. Christianity presents an opportunity for radical change that often threatens those who love us because they no longer understand us. We ought to love Jesus more than our own families, says Jesus!. That’s a statement some Christians wish Jesus had never made. Or is it? Could Jesus be suggesting that in him and his ministry a new world is placed next to an old world and that he asks us to choose which one we will live in?
