When taken together as a whole, the readings telegraph a single, unmistakable message: the new is better than the not-so-new! Each reading encourages us to turn over a new leaf: from focusing on ourselves to God’s love. When we rely on God’s loyal love rather than pinning our hopes on our desires or strengths, God gives us time, opportunity, and examples to see the value of the new: new hopes, new light, new purposes, new minds, new changes, new revelations, and new realities. The parable Jesus tells provides us with a refreshing attitude and stellar models of a new, selfless humanity.
