God takes care of us like the owner of a vineyard: lovingly and painstakingly providing everything necessary for the beloved vineyard to produce good and abundant fruit. Why, then, do we so often fail to offer to God the best we have to offer, mostly by living peacefully, acting justly, and seeking wisely? Jesus’ parable prompts us to repent of our failure to see and act upon the witness of contemporary prophets who speak passionately about helping the poor, eliminating racial injustice, and confronting aspects of our culture that degrade life.
