How Do You Take ThatWith or Without?

Epistle and Gospel unite today to tell us a story of a faithful servant (disciple) in a struggle of faith and doubt before God. Peter’s an exemplar of unswerving commitment to God—quite like Elijah standing alone against 400 prophets of Baal. Peter’s sublime confession of his belief in Jesus Christ transforms him into “Rock.” And yet, Peter is among the most fearful and doubtful of all God’s servants. Scripture doesn’t give us examples of flawless faith; instead, we read about people mixed up in faith and doubt. They’re the example that instructs us, reassures us, and prepares us to receive God’s response to our struggles.
